Lake Batur fills the crater below
the peak of stunningly tranquil 1,717 m Mount Batur, found in the
north east of Bali. This is an absolute " must-do" during
your time on Bali as you can choose from a wealth of activities
at this amazing spot from boating to trekking, to bathing in the
natural hot springs.
A climb to the summit of batur Mountain
( just a two hour ascent if beginning at Toya Bungkah about 8 km
from Panelokan) is not so difficul and doesn't require a guide and
once at the top, there in even a " warung" from where
to civilly enjoy the surrounding panorama! It is at sunrise that
the crowds gather, largely due to the cooler temperatures as well
as the fact that there is a serene atmosphere as the day breaks
after all, Nehru dis call Bali the " morning of the world"
- although a quick reality check is the wips of steam that rise
from the volcanic rock to drift across the black lava slopes, reminding
us that it is not yet extinct. The original village of Batur was
buried by lava in the eruption of 1926, forcing its inhabitants
to resettle on the high cliffs overlooking the caldera. With them
they took one shrine unharmed by the eruption, the most revered
shrine, wwhich was dedicated to the goddess of the lakes and waters,
Ida Batara Dewi Ulun Danu, and rebuilt it as Pura Ulun Danu and
placed it in the centre of the new Batur Village.
The first view of the volcano and crescent-shaped crater lake
is as stunning as it is unexpected. The climbing road suddenly
emerges at the edge of the crater overlooking the entire basin.
This is known as Panelokan ( translated as " viewing spoy")
and there are several restaurants from where to repose and get
a well deserved bite. Remember to bring along a camera, as the
breathtaking view is one to be cherished and shared back home.
